Bridal shop owner does her bit for charity

Bridal shop owner collecting dresses for charity

Bridal shop owner Becky Murtagh, who runs Nancy Jane Bridal in Stretford, is doing her bit for charity by collecting used bridal gowns for local charity, St Ann’s Hospice.

The hospice has its own specialist bridal store in Cheadle where it raises money through selling second hand wedding gowns. Bridal shop owner Becky has been helping out the charity store by collecting the dresses, cleaning, and running repairs on them if needed, in order for the charity to sell them on and raise much needed funds.

Becky even made the ultimate sacrifice herself and donated her own wedding dress, which she wore to tie the knot with husband Mark three years ago. The mother of two admitted it was a tough decision to make, as such a garment holds great sentimental value, but conceded she’d never wear it again, so it was right to pass it on.

As well as bridal dresses, the charity also collects other items such as groom and page boy suits, bridesmaid and flower girl dresses, and even accessories such as tiaras, shoes and handbags. Becky says she’s even encouraged her own bridesmaids to give up their dresses for the St Ann’s Hospice.

29-year-old Becky has been donating second hand wedding dresses to St Ann’s Hospice since she set up her business in 2007. The charity say they are very grateful for the work Becky puts in, and know they can always rely on dresses arriving from her in immaculate condition.

Wedding prompts bride to lose half her body weight

Sheila was determined she wasn't going to be a "fat bride" and so lost 12 stone ahead of her wedding

A recent survey revealed that the average bride-to-be aims to lose two stone in weight ahead of their big day. However Sheila McInnes went a step further and shed half her body weight before she walked down the aisle.

After her partner Brian proposed, although elated at the prospect of becoming his wife, Sheila refused to name the date as she dreaded the thought being a “fat bride.”

At 24 stone, and a dress size 32, Sheila was morbidly obese. However it wasn’t until she developed sleep apnoea which was caused by her weight, that she felt spurred on to lose the weight.

After being told she’d need to lose 4 stone before being considered for a gastric band operation, the mother-of-two embarked on a diet from the internet which replaced meals with shakes, bars, and soups. After losing the 4 stone, Sheila decided to ditch the gastric band operation and instead continued with the diet, determined to shed the pounds that way.

The dedication paid off as 32-year-old Sheila was able to buy that wedding dress she’s been dreading getting into and walk down the aisle with confidence, 12 stone lighter than she was when she got engaged.

Many friends who attended the wedding hadn’t seen Sheila since her dramatic weight loss which prompted quite a few gasps when she made her big arrival on their wedding day last October.

Husband Brian admitted fighting back the tears as he watched his bride in a stunning strapless size 12 dress walking towards him on their big day.

Rules relaxed on church weddings

Couples will be free to marry in a church where they have little connection

The General Synod at the Church’s parliament has voted to relax the current rule which prevents couples from marrying in a church where they don’t have a strong connection to the parish.

It is hoped the move will enable the church to claw back some of the wedding business which is currently being dominated by stately homes and hotels offering civil ceremony services.

Although the regulations will be significantly relaxed, engaged couples will still have to prove a “qualifying connection” with their chosen church in order to be permitted to marry there.

Church officials have admitted that the old rules were difficult to justify and excluded people unnecessarily. Now brides and grooms-to-be will have greater freedom to choose a church which best suits their needs.

It’s anticipated that the news will create a surge in wedding bookings at churches which may have been used for a celebrity wedding, or which have been used as locations for films or TV shows.

Some clergy with especially beautiful churches objected to the slackening of the marriage laws as they feared they would be unable to cope with the demand from couples wanting to tie the knot in their attractive buildings.

The number of church weddings has declined by 40% in the last 10 years while civil ceremony services held at specially licensed premises has soared. It is hoped this change in the rules may go some way to helping to redress the balance.

Wedding guest etiquette for the digital age

Posting pics of the big day on Facebook without telling the bride is a modern day social faux pas

Weddingchannel.com has compiled a list of do’s and don’t for wedding guests who Tweet. The introduction of internet social networking sites has thrown up a whole host of potential pitfalls for wedding guests, so to avoid a digital faux pas this wedding season, here are a few hints.

According to the weddingchannel.com, a leading wedding and gift registry website, there are a number of unspoken rules wedding guests with a penchant for Facebook and Twitter need to abide by if they want to keep on the right side of the bride and groom.

At the top of the list of digital no no’s is posting photos of the big day on the internet without letting the newlyweds know first. In a poll conducted by weddingchannel.com 40% of the brides questioned said this was one of their biggest grievances.

Another common gripe is wedding guests giving minute-by-minute updates on Twitter or Facebook about the wedding day. Or even worse, announcing another couple’s engagement before the news is officially out, definitely a big no-no.

Sending your RSVP for a wedding via Twitter is also at the top of a list of pet-hates for brides and grooms to be. If they’ve put the effort in to post you a handwritten invitation, you should show the same courtesy back.

One of the biggest pitfalls to avoid is complaining about a wedding online; just don’t do it! You never know who may read your posts and you could end up offending a friend for life.

Anya Hindmarch launches personalised handbags ideal for bridal gifts

The satin clutch bag from Anya Hindmarch can be personalised with the bride's initials

As the wedding season gets underway you may be racking your brains trying to come up with an imaginative gift for a bride-to-be. Well Anya Hindmarch may just be the answer to your prayers as the handbag designer has just launched a brand new range of personalised handbags which make the perfect gift for the blushing bride.

These designer handbags don’t come cheap mind you, with prices starting from £295. However if you are playing the role of a bridesmaid at a close friend’s wedding, why not club together with the rest of the girls in order to keep the cost down?

We’re sure every bride would be thrilled to receive this gift, plus the date of the wedding and the brides initials are embroidered into the bag so she’ll have a lovely keepsake from the big day. For an extra touch, a handwritten note can also be sewn into the lining of the bag.

The classic satin Maud clutch bag is an elegant and sophisticated bag in its own right, and although it is ideal for use on a bride’s big day, the versatile bag can be used again for other events and occasions so the newlywed will be able to show off her memento from her special day for years to come.

The personalised bridal bags are available from Anya Hindmarch’s London store.

Music lovers say, “I do” at Jazz festival

Music fans choose Derry Jazz as their wedding venue

A pair of jazz fans decided to tie-in their love for the music and each other by getting hitched at Londonderry’s Jazz Festival.

The couple have been together for 10 years and have been coming to Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival together for the last 7 years.

Groom Dave Donnery admitted it was his idea to hold their wedding at the bustling music event but it didn’t take long for his fiancée to jump onboard with the idea. The soon-to-be-married-couple love absolutely everything to do with the festival including the atmosphere, music and the top line-up of great entertainment so for them, Derry Jazz is the perfect place to get hitched.

The happy couple will exchange vows next Friday afternoon at Londonderry’s Guildhall before heading off to City Hotel to enjoy their reception with the first gig of the night to keep them entertained. As luck would have it, the band playing at the couple’s hotel on their wedding night happens to be their favourite.

In these times of frugality and budget weddings, holding a wedding at a music festival is certainly one way to save money on the cost of entertainment for your bash.

The Festival runs over 6 days from Wednesday April 28th.
