A slice of the 1981 Diana and Charles wedding cake has been sold for £180

A slice of royal wedding cake believed to be from Prince Charles and Diana Princess of Wales’ 1981 wedding has been sold on an online auction website for £180.

The small bite-size morsel of iced fruit cake has spent the past 30 years packed away in a Tupperware box until the owner decided to sell it on Trade Me, an internet auction site in New Zealand.

The seller, Katrina Greenslade, explained that her father had been given the slice of royal wedding cake after one tier was gifted to the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1981 where her father was a sergeant.

According to Katrina, the air base drew lots to decide who would have a piece of the royal cake, and her father won the chance to try a slice. However instead of eating it there and then, he took it back home to show his family where it seems, no one had the heart to actually eat it.

After 30 years in an airtight container, Katrina conceded the white icing has turned a yellowish shade, and the piece of royal history does smell like exactly you’d expect a 30-year-old cake to smell – which isn’t good we’re guessing.

The item attracted 40,000 hits as royal fans bombarded the advert on the auction site. The morsel of royal wedding cake eventually sold to a bidder only known as “Paul” for £180.

The hotel chain has unveiled its cheapest ever wedding deal

Cash-strapped couples need not delay their wedding for fear of expense any longer as Premier Inn have unveiled their latest deal which will allow couples to tie the knot for just £199.

The credit crunch busting package provides everything you would, and wouldn’t expect, including a nightie for the bride, and pyjamas for the groom. The package includes a buffet for up to 20 guests, a groom’s suit and bride’s dress both from Asda, and even a template for the best man’s speech and also confetti for the guests.

The cost-cutting wedding offer is only available at selected Premier Inns around the UK including Swansea, Warrington, Sheffield, Wigan and Barnsley.

Once the excitement of the big day is over, the couple can relax at their chosen Premier Inn and enjoy a two-night honeymoon. One couple have been left out of pocket after half of their wedding buffet failed to show up

The collapse of a North East catering company could spell disaster for a number of soon to be married couples who’ve booked their services for the big day.

Northumbria Caterers Ltd was forced to close last week and are due to bring the receivers in to wind up the business. The company director says they’ve simply run out of money and that she’s been paying the staff wages out of her own pocket for the last few months in a last ditch attempt to keep the business afloat.

However this leaves many brides and grooms to be in lurch, such as one couple, Sam and Ryan from North Shields. They’ve been left £1,300 out of pocket after enlisting the services of Northumbria Caterers for their wedding buffet. The food arrived four hours late, and there wasn’t enough of it to go round.

The company has apologised to the couple and agreed to pay back the money, however the newlyweds are still waiting for the cash to arrive.

The catering company has been trading for the last 25 years but came under new ownership in January of this year. The new director blames a combination of personal and financial problems for the collapse of the business.

Northumbria Caterers have endeavoured to get in touch with all customers who have booked their services for a future wedding or other event, although not all were contactable.

A hotel in the North East of England has hit the headlines this week after it refused to refund a deposit for a wedding reception after the bride sadly passed away.

35-year-old Annette Bainbridge had planned to tie the knot with Paul Teece in November but after suffering a severe asthma attack, the bride-to-be died suddenly at the end of May. Annette and her fiancé had already paid the full £2,000 for their wedding on May 1st.

The hotel was contacted by the grieving family to inform them that the wedding would have to be cancelled following the untimely death of the bride. Despite the tragic circumstances, the hotel asked for a cancellation fee of £1,500 be paid which was stipulated in the contract.

The establishment has since waived the cancellation fee however the cost of the wedding has not been recouped, as the couple hadn’t taken out wedding insurance. The family and fiancé of the deceased bride say that although the hotel is legally obliged to keep the money, they question the hotel’s moral integrity given the sad circumstances which forced the cancellation of the wedding.

When asked for their take on the situation, the general manager at the hotel in question refused to comment, stating that the matter was a private one between them and the groom, Mr Teece.

A recent poll of 3,000 brides has revealed that 1 in 5 newlywed ladies will pile on the weight they lost in the run up to their wedding 6 months into married life.

Half of those questioned said they had gone on a crash diet in an attempt to lose weight quickly as the wedding day came closer. A high percentage of these brides said that they intended to lose 2st in preparation for their nuptials.

As an extra motivation to shed the pounds, some brides went as far as buying a dress a size too small so they would no choice but to drop a dress size before the big day.
