According to a recent survey from Slim.Fast, brides are doing just that with one in three admitting to recruiting a large bridesmaid in order to make themselves look and feel good on their big day.

With so much pressure on brides to look perfect on their wedding day, many are turning to drastic measures, such as asking overweight friends to play the role of bridesmaid, so as to ensure they look slimmer in comparison in the all-important wedding snaps.

It’s not just brides who are feeling the pressure according to the study, 20% of female wedding guests embarked on a diet before heading to a wedding celebration. However slimmer wedding guests were also a worry for brides-to-be with 40% saying they felt insecure standing next to skinny guests at their nuptials.

Popular strategies employed by wedding guests to combat these feelings of anxiety include buying a new outfit to boost confidence, but a further 40% said new shoes were the best pick-me-up for pre-wedding angst.

Half of the brides questioned as part of the Slim.Fast survey said they planned to lose weight before their big day.

The practice of choosing larger bridesmaids to boost the self esteem of brides-to-be was described by one of the nutritionists at Slim.Fast as a “worrying trend” as the statistics seem to suggest this is a growing problem amongst brides.

A recent poll of 3,000 brides has revealed that 1 in 5 newlywed ladies will pile on the weight they lost in the run up to their wedding 6 months into married life.

Half of those questioned said they had gone on a crash diet in an attempt to lose weight quickly as the wedding day came closer. A high percentage of these brides said that they intended to lose 2st in preparation for their nuptials.

As an extra motivation to shed the pounds, some brides went as far as buying a dress a size too small so they would no choice but to drop a dress size before the big day.

However some lucky brides said the weight dropped off in the run up to the wedding with the stress of organising the occasion.

Once all the fun of the wedding was over, 15% of the brides quizzed admitted to letting go on honeymoon and indulging in fatty and sugary food which they had banned as part of their pre-wedding diet.

The average weight loss achieved by brides-to-be was estimated as 1st 2lbs.

Brides are under immense pressure to look their very best on their wedding day. Often family and friends, some of whom they haven’t seen for years, will be there on the big day so it’s vital they feel good on their special day. Plus there’s the added pressure of the all-important wedding photographs; no bride wants to look back on these and feel that she didn’t look her best.
