Robot conducts Tokyo wedding service
Japanese couple chose a robot to conduct their marriage ceremony
A 4 foot tall robot complete with pigtails and flashing eyes conducted a wedding in Tokyo over the weekend. Wearing a wreath of flowers, the robot known as the I-Fairy, oversaw proceedings at the marriage of Satko Inovet and Tomohiro Shibata on Sunday.
According to the manufacturers of the I-Fairy, Kokovo Co, this is the first wedding which was lead by a robot.
While all of the other guests stood as the bride made her entrance, the robot minister remained seated as she was bolted to a chair. Throughout the service a man input the commands into a computer which was connected to the robot, ensuring that the ceremony ran smoothly.
The unusual choice of registrar was the perfect option for this Japanese couple. The bride works for the company which manufactures the robot, and her new husband is a professor of robotics.
The wedding took place at a restaurant in Hibiya Park, Central Tokyo, with approximately 50 guests present for the rooftop ceremony lead by the robot. The bride described the experience as “a lot of fun.”
As one of the leading countries for robotics, Japan is hoping to encourage the use of robots in everyday life, with the wedding providing a perfect example of how this can be done.
