Groom crosses ocean to marry his bride
Groom rows 2,500 miles to marry his bride in sun-soaked Barbados
Forget lavish limos, horse drawn carriages, and helicopters, one groom went all out to ensure his arrival on his wedding day was extra memorable.
38-year-old Neil Ward, originally from Pembrokeshire in West Wales, rowed 2,500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Barbados to reach his bride-to-be Louise Robertson.
The new Mrs Ward said the unusual idea came from a comment Neil made as she said: “Neil joked he’d row the Atlantic just to marry me” and the whole thing snowballed from there.
Ski instructor Neil set sail on January 4th from La Gomera, Canary Islands, and after 39 gruelling days, he arrived in Barbados onboard the Britannia lll along with 12 other crew members.
However the bad weather and some technical glitches hampered their progress somewhat, and the rowers arrived day later than planned, throwing the wedding plans into disarray. Luckily travel operator Tropical Sky who were arranging the wedding, were able to postpone the ceremony by 24 hours, just in time for Neil’s arrival.
The couple currently live in the French Alps. They both work as ski instructors and are no strangers to adventure so the groom’s unique arrival was fitting for their big day.
Neil and Louise tied the knot on the sun-soaked Almond Beach Village in Barbados on Saturday. After the ceremony the newlyweds were treated to a guard of oars by the 12 crew members from Neil’s mammoth rowing trip.
