Fake US wedding fair scam conned thousands out of cash
Thousands cheated out of money by Boston Wedding Fair scam
An internet scam which advertised a fake wedding fair succeeded in getting thousands of brides and grooms-to-be and suppliers to part with their money.
The website billed the event, scheduled for this coming weekend, as the “biggest and most extravagant” show. It lured brides to the event with the promise of prizes and free gifts, and even claimed it would donate some of its profits to the Haiti earthquake appeal.
The event called itself the Boston 411 Home and Bridal Show 2010 and managed to con approximately 5,000 people into parting with their cash. Wedding suppliers paid up for stands at the show, whilst visitors handed over their money for pre-paid admission passes.
The scam was finally uncovered after a number of suppliers contacted the venue where the wedding fair was scheduled to be held to enquire about set-up procedures and so on. They were informed that no such event was due to take place.
However the scammers had a lady on standby ready to answer the worried calls of the suppliers. They were told that there had been a problem with the venue and they were currently working to resolve the situation.
The phoney show was advertised heavily on weddingwire.com and also on popular social networking site Facebook. The contact number given for the event organisers goes straight to voicemail. The police and FBI Cyber Crime Unit are investigating the con and offering help to the victims of the scam.
