Shilpa Shetty ties the knot with businessman Raj Kundra

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has married her businessman fiancé Raj Kundra on Sunday ending week’s speculation. The couple tied the knot in a luxurious Hindu ceremony on a hilltop overlooking Mumbai.

The 34-year-old star first came to the attention of the UK public following her stint on Celebrity Big Brother where she was allegedly subjected to racial abuse by Jade Goody. Shilpa then went on to win the show and became a household name in Britain. After leaving the Big Brother house, Shilpa met London based businessman Raj Kundra for the first time and their relationship has been going strong ever since.

The actress had been expected to wed before Christmas however the exact date and location of the nuptials had been kept tightly under wraps. The ceremony finally took place on Sunday on a hilltop in Khandala with the couple’s close family and friends in attendance.

The bride wore an ornate red saree dripping with jewels along with a flower embellishment, known as a gajra, clipped to her hair which trailed down to her waist. The bride’s father was present at the wedding despite having been diagnosed with two types of malaria just two days before the big day.

The groom made a show stopping arrival drawing up to the ceremony in a chariot pulled by two horses. Raj wore a maroon coloured sherwani with delicate gold embroidery, turban and a veil of pearls known as sehra.

Celebrations following the wedding went on well into the night with many of the biggest names in Bollywood attending the lavish reception in Mumbai. Shilpa’s sister, Shamita who pulled out of an Indian reality TV show so as to not miss the wedding, is said to have performed at the reception.

In a recent interview Shilpa said she intends to “excel as a homemaker” once she is married, and that she and her new husband are planning to split their time between Mumbai and London in the future.
